Newspapers seem to always have something to say about the weak job market, but don’t let it discourage you. Unemployment is high these days, which makes the job market more competitive than ever. It may seem a bit old fashioned, but searching the newspaper classifieds is a great way to find local job openings and opportunities. With newspaper circulation at an all time low, many job classified sections have been offering companies to advertise for pennies on the dollar. Local newspapers have also gone online so you may find job postings and more detailed job descriptions in online employment classified listings in addition to traditional help wanted ads. You must also remember that everyone else is probably looking at the classified ads too, so if you see a job that fits, then you must act immediately. Do not hesitate to send a well writen professional resume or contact the employer that same day.
Be sure to follow up as well. You potential employer has no idea who you are. Call or email them after you’ve sent your resume and officially introduce yourself. This will begin to establish a relationship, an increase your chances of getting an interview. Yes, newspaper classifieds are old fashioned, but they can help you find what you are looking for, that local job.
