You are brand new to the workforce and you don’t have any experience to put on your resume. Don’t worry. There are other ways to make your resume look great and to get you noticed by employers. For beginners, writing a resume serves a slightly different purpose than it does for an experienced professional in the job market. Generally, an employee’s work experience or post high school education (college, university, trade school, or certifications) are primarily the focus of their resume. However, how do you make a resume for your first job if you have limited on the job experience or any formal education. If you find yourself having less then desirable experience and education, focus on any personal qualifications or real world knowledge you may bring to an employer. Any travel or cultural experience or languages can open doors for you. Volunteer work, leadership traits, or even social skills are valid and marketable skills you can use instead of on the job professional work experience.

If you are a new High School graduate and unsure what job opportunities are available? Beyond the fast food regiment or minimum wage jobs, use any hobbies or skills you have that may benefit an employer. Let’s say you use social media websites and have experience with using computer hardware and software tools. These days, many companies are looking for employees who have a solid understanding of these marketing tools like Facebook, Twitter, and the internet in general. Employers are willing to hire someone with these skills to help expand their own business presence but have little time to devote to learning these tools for themselves.

The important take away here is, find what you are good at and turn your skills and talents into assets that an employer will pay you for. But most employers will not list or post these types of job opportunities because they themselves are unaware of how to even evaluate or qualify someone with these skills. Your job beyond writing a resume to highlight these qualifications is to inform and educate a company or business owner what you can offer them and why it is valuable to their long term success.
